Trauma Informed Yoga & Mindfulness
This is a two part series. Part One: An Introduction and Part Two: Certification Module
As a yoga instructor, therapist, teacher, or anyone who regularly serves others, it is almost certain that you will encounter people who have experienced trauma in their lives. Therefore, it is important to be trauma informed.
Introduction to Trauma Informed Yoga & Mindfulness explores definitions of several types of trauma experienced by children and adults, the basic neuroscience of trauma, signs, symptoms and common misdiagnoses, how to make your classes more trauma-informed to support mental health, and how yoga can be part of the healing process. It includes practical tools presented in both lecture and experiential format.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This training is open to any person who is interested in learning about how to be more trauma informed at work and at home, including yoga teachers, yoga students, preschool-grade 12 educators, physical education and health education teachers, school or family counselors, psychologists, social workers, occupational, physical, and speech therapists, camp counselors, recreation directors, pediatricians, doctors, and more!
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: PART ONE
- Participants will be able to define and understand the benefits of a trauma informed yoga and mindfulness practice as reflected in the growing evidence base.
- Participants will be able to identify potential trauma triggers specific to sharing yoga and mindfulness practices.
- Participants will have the ability to modify teaching techniques to instruct with a trauma informed lens.
- Participants will understand how to create trauma informed yoga and mindfulness-based sequences designed to regulate the nervous system while supporting mental health & emotional resilience.
- Participants will be able to identify additional tools and resources for continued growth and education.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: PART TWO
- Participants will understand the power of community resilience and examine the power of community resilience and how it can positively mitigate the long term effects of trauma.
- Participants will be able to explain the effects that working with individuals who have experienced trauma may have on providers and learn practices to develop one’s personal resilience.
- Participants will recognize and understand the nuances of types of trauma experienced by specific populations.
- Participants will be able to create trauma informed yoga and mindfulness-based sequences designed to serve specific populations.
- Participants will be able to identify additional tools and resources for continued growth and education.
CERTIFICATION: PART TWO
Part Two expands upon the information shared during the Introduction Module, and provides trainees with additional understanding of trauma as it relates to specific populations, through the use of lecture, role-play and experiential learning. Returning students will also dive deeper into building resilience through community, connection, and self-care. Time will be spent collaborating with peers to develop population-specific lesson plans. Those who complete all requirements are eligible for certification.
CE HOURS / APPROVED PROVIDERS
Trainings are valid for Yoga Alliance CE hours and possible CEUs or PDPs from your credentialing organization.

RECOMMENDED TRAININGS & RESOURCES
We also strongly suggest attending this workshop in conjunction with the Yoga & Mindfulness for Diverse Abilities Teacher Training. Oftentimes the two courses are scheduled back-to-back enabling the completion of 25 training hours in a three day period (applicable as contact hours for the 95-hour RCYT program and CEs for Yoga Alliance).
