CLY in Schools Group at Nubble LightLast summer, Dani Orender, 500RYT, took FIVE ChildLight Yoga teacher trainings back-to-back at our Summer Training Immersion! We caught up with Dani and asked her to share the details of her experience. May this interview be of benefit to those of you considering spending time with us this summer!

Tell us about yourself!

I live in Virginia Beach, VA with my husband and two golden retrievers. I currently teach children’s, prenatal, and warm yoga at Zen Hot Yoga (voted number one yoga facility in the Hampton Roads area). I teach yoga and mindfulness at The Barry Robinson Center, a residential treatment facility for children ages 6-17 that are associated with the military. Privately, I teach under D.O. Yoga.

What prompted you to attend the Summer Immersion?

I decided on the summer immersion program due to my work schedule. Blocking off two weeks to immerse myself in a learning environment with like minded people seemed like the right thing to do; and it was! I’m originally from the Southern Adirondacks and spending part of July back in the Northeast was an added bonus.

What is your fondest memory of the program?

My fondest memory of the program was (it’s hard to pick just one) making contacts and lasting friendships.

Did you encounter any challenges?

Instead of using CLY’s lodging recommendations, I used AirBnB for the first time and decided to go with the least expensive place, $30 a night, which I thought was being thrifty. It turned out that I was staying in a room in a house with three college guys. My bedroom and bathroom door didn’t lock, and I had no curtain in my room so, needless to say, I was always early to class!

Where did you stay? Eat? Visit in your spare time? Dani Orender_CLY in Schools_Long Sands York ME

I cooked about half of my meals and brought them for lunch as I am gluten-free and a veg, but I did enjoy eating at: 7th SettlementTaste of IndiaSara ThaiRoots (amazing juices!), Ikko, and I discovered Tucker’s which had gluten-free pancakes! I enjoyed the “field trips” to Maine to visit the Nubble lighthouse, walk in the ocean, and visit the fudge shop for souvenirs. I also spent time at Noggin Factory as well as in the park across the street from the studio enjoying the free music.

Do you have three tips for someone considering attending the program this summer?

1. Do it! You won’t regret it.
2. If you see something for sale in the boutique at beginning of the program that you are interested in, buy it as things sell out.
3. Bring a meditation cushion for the times you will be sitting. I loved my Lotus Meditation cushion that I bought at The Yoga Loft in Bethlehem, PA at a previous foundational ChildLight Yoga & Mindfulness for Children Teacher Training (also available on Etsy).

What information did you find to be the most useful? (i.e. meditations, poses, games, themes, etc.)?

There was so much useful information that you gain so take notes or photos so you can always refer back. I still use my mindful breathing lanyard daily and it is a favorite with my students of any age.

Anything else you'd like to share with us about your experience?

Attending the immersion program gave me training in teensspecial needs populations and trauma informed yoga that I use at one of my facilities and I find it to be the most rewarding. Honestly, if you’re on the fence about attending, do it!
